Hunting with your ferret
What do I need?
Purse nets - a sheet of netting with each end gathered and fitted with a metal ring. Inexpensive to buy ready-made but you can buy your own kits made from nylon or hemp. Nylon is the better as the hemp tends to be heavy when wet and if not dried out properly can rot and create an opportunity for the rabbit to escape.
Spade - to recover your ferret if needed.
Box - to carry and transport your ferrets. (Make your own or you can buy from a field sport specialists)
Brass priest - to kill your rabbit.
Knife - to deal with your rabbit.
Gloves and knee pads - for crawling around in the thorns and nettles
Secateurs - to cut back any hedges or bushes
Not Essential but desirable
Electronic ferret finder - a two part system, collar and receiver.
Appropriate clothing - camouflage preferable as even a rabbit may see you coming if it sees a brightly-coloured outfit. Also to allow for changeable weather conditions, waterproof boots.
Dog - always a good companion.
Out and about
Have a look around your local rural area. Are there signs of rabbit damage to crop? If so this is a good starting point! Study the area carefully from a distance before you start off with your hunting. Take a note of all the entrance and exit points of the rabbits.
Warning! You must obtain hunting rights from the land owner. In writing is best.
Now you and your ferret are well equipped and ready for your first hunt.
Happy Hunting.
