Khao Kheow Open Zoo, situated on Bangkok Highway, is a good day trip from Pattaya. Among the biggest zoos in Thailand, it has more than 200 beasts. Patronised by the Thai Government, the zoo has constantly evolved. It is proud of the bird aviary which is the second largest in Asia. Black Necked Stork and White Crested Laughing Thrush are two most prized birds in the aviary. The zoo is credited for having successfully bred some endangered animals like rare Clouded Leopard.

Animals
The zoo has all animals one expects to see like elephant, tiger, lion, chimpanzee, giraffe, camel etc. One is allowed to get close to these beasts and even feed them. There is no restriction on going anywhere in the zoo, but exploring the remote areas of the open zoo on foot would just not be possible because it lies over around 400 acres. So if you want to see al the animals, you could drive around. Endangered mammals which could be found in the zoo include the Asian Wild Dog, and Malayan Tapir.

Bird Aviary
The bird aviary of Khao Kheow Open Zoo is famous all over the world. The aviary has been developed on a mountain slope and has pleasant environment. Lovers of avian life always enjoy visit to the aviary. Many of them spend hours photographing these birds. Several rare Asian bird species can be found here.

Wild Cats’ Park
Wild Cats’ Park, located within the Open Zoo, lies over 40 acres, providing home to several species of wild gats. It has variety of landscapes like desert, grasslands, woodlands, wetlands, rocks and mountain. All cat species have been provided their natural habitat. The Park was originally developed by the Conservation Breeding Specialist Group (CBSG) under the International Union of Conservation for Nature (IUCN).

Night Safari
A famous attraction of the zoo, Night Safari begins with a dinner buffet of Thai cuisine. Tourists have a 45 minute tram ride along a 3.5 km route through natural habitats. An half-hour Animal Presentation is included in the show.

Elephant Trekking
Riding around the park on an elephant is a popular option. To watch the wildlife from a natural height of a couple of meters is always exhilarating.

How to Reach
Journey from Pattaya town to the zoo takes around 1.5 hours. The best option would be to hire a four-wheeled vehicle.
