Getting Rid of Spyware
Computers allow us to be more productive. We can do things better, with less effort, and in less time. Spyware, however, can kill our productivity. It can hijack your PC and render it virtually useless. Many of our customers have PCs that barely work because they’ve been so totally infested with malware, viruses, and other malicious code.
And little do our customers know that we use several versions of off-the-shelf anti-spyware programs!
We’re all about efficiency. We want our customers back on track as fast as possible. Getting their PCs back to them sooner also costs them less money. Here’s what we do.
First, we ensure that all of their data is backed up. We use Windows’ built-in NT Backup utility and burn the data to DVD. Then, we test it!
Second, we go about scanning the PC with at least two spyware detection tools. We usually use Spyware Nuker or Spyware Doctor along with a free tool from either Spybot or Adaware (go to google.com and search for those items).
We’ve found that using multiple tools allows us to find the maximum number of infected files.
For removal, we simply use the removal feature of those programs.
Finally, we use the aforementioned tools for inoculation against future infestations.
As always, things can go wrong. Once in a while, removing spyware can leave remnants in the registry or file system. Best case scenario is to use a registry restoral tool; worst case, a reinstallation of Windows, or worse, a complete reformatting of the drive and fresh installation of Windows.
