Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island, and looks similar to certain scenes from Star Wars. Just a four wheel drive along the east coast beach, or through the inland forests is a mix of ancient rainforest’s and mystical sand dunes.

Sand Safaris are very popular here. Only four wheel drive vehicles can negotiate the terrain here because the huge amount of sand and lack of paved roads would destroy any normal car in seconds.

Many chose to tour Fraser Island through a nine person convoy. This is considered a self tour as nine individuals are grouped together, given a four wheel drive and directions and sent off on a three day two night camping trip. These tour tend to be less expensive and are great for making new friends and seeing the things that interest you. However the down side to these tours are that you may have an inexperienced driver in the group who is constantly bogging you down in the sand, there is a slight chance for a fatal accident and if the group does not get along it can be a long and stressful experience.

If you are not keen on the idea of sharing your safari with strangers you also have the choice to hire your own 4WD. These cars can be hired from Harvey Beach, Rainbow Beach and Fraser Island. You are then required to put down a large credit card deposit, that will not be returned should you drive through salt water, and you must watch a driving instructional video.

Fraser Island is also home to an array of wildlife including the purest strain of Dingo. Although the Dingo may appear to be tame, you still must be careful as their only interest in people is the food they leave. It is not encouraged that food is left or that the Dingos are fed. Back in April of 2001 a nine year old boy, on Fraser Island, was killed by a Dingo, this event could have been avoided if the Dingos were not being feed, therefore encouraging them to come around the camp.
